Swallow Hill and Providence Graduation
- February, 2009
I just wanted to update you on how this weekend went. A friend called me
yesterday to say, "Did you notice that everyone kept clapping until you came
back to your seat and sat down? They didn't do that for the others." Well,
no, frankly I didn't notice, because I was primarily worried about just
getting down those narrow old stairs without a railing and my knees wobbling
so. But, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of playing at Swallow Hill
immensely, and want to do more with them in the future. The host, Mr. Harry
Tufts, invited me back. What a cool guy. I just was so touched that this man
has made it his life's legacy to provide a platform for all kinds of
musicians to perform month after month, year after year. He's one of a
handful, I'm sure, because we just don't do community concerts any more.
Afterwards, I went up to the big hall and got to celebrate watching Clay
Kirkland's band perform "I Am" a totally groovy song with wonderful East
Indian type instruments and all kinds of drummers and drums, including Ed
Contreares, a guy I am also a huge fan of. Clay and this other guy did some
feat of meditative verbal drumming that was extremely fun. I was blown away
by how cool that harmonica was out of the blues element. He's morphed folks!
Anyway, on Saturday evening, I once again performed a mini-concert for my #1
fan who was graduating from a two year rehab program of Providence
Ministries downtown. That proved to me once again where my real heart lies,
and that the fact that my voice is cooperating is just a vehicle for the
ministry of music. God showed up that night. I was delighted that another
person whom I've been praying for for years also showed up and ended up
having a long conversation with her mother afterwards about her struggles
and conflicted lifestyle and desires. So, I felt that this was much more
than a bonus to the primary event.
My #1 fan's family came for her graduation also, and the daughter was able
to be openly honest about her anger and resentment that her mother was on
the road to recovery whilst all the bitter roots of her alcoholism was still
ruining her own life. I got some timely one on one conversation with her and
was able to share how the songs from that album actually came out of my own
mom's dysfunction and that she had also never been able to apologize to me,
and how the music had helped me work through it. Very interesting twist to
the evening. So, I'm thanking God not only for the opportunities to perform
my songs, but for the actual events that brought about the writing of them.
